Internet shortcut icons reverting to default E

My customer has Windows Vista 32-bit Ultimate, with Internet Explorer 7 as
default browser. To accomodate his desire to visually identify separate
Internet shortcuts on his desktop, I have located and saved the favicon files
into a separate folder with new names, and I have changed the icons for those
shortcuts to those saved .ICO files in that folder. To prevent the system
from changing the icons, I have marked all of those shortcuts as "Read-only".

It didn't help.

Some (not all...!) of those shortcuts have changed to the default E document
icon. If I attempt to fix them, when I go into their Properties, it shows
the icon I want! I can select it again, and it ignores my changes on the
desktop. I can change the icon to anything else, and save it, and that works
-- until another (future) reboot brings the problem back again.

As I have explained, I can work-around this, but it keeps reappearing.

What is the permanent fix for this?

Hi,
Two things you might try...
1. It's been reported that FavOrg works with Vista.
http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm Line 108 right side.
2. You can modify each Internet Shortcut to open a new instance of IE.
Find "IExplore.exe" (probably in Program Files\Internet Explorer)
Right-click and drag IExplore.exe to the desktop and choose "Create
shortcut." Right-click that shortcut> Properties> Target, modify the Target
to include the URL.
Example:
"C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\IEXPLORE.EXE"
becomes
"C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\IEXPLORE.EXE" www.yahoo.com
Note a space between EXE" and ww
Rename the shortcut if desired and associate the icon with it. It will no
longer be an Internet Shortcut- it will be a lnk / LNK file and IE7 should
leave the icon alone.

Hope this helps,
Don
