I am using my laptop to connect directly into my router as I have done
forever. The problem is that when using INTERNET OPTIONS and clicking on
CONNECTIONS and then LAN SETTINGS, every time I click on "automatically
detect settings" and then hit "OK" it does not work. When I open it again
has "use a proxy server for your LAN" and nothing is checked under
"automatically detect setting" So I have no connection through "Internet
Explorer" however I have a connection through "Mozilla Firefox" Please let
me know what is happening as I am going crazy.

Thanks

So why are you even bothering with LAN settings? They do not apply to you.

Windows version? IE version?

One or more options/settings in an ever-growing number of third-party
applications may be disallowing the change(s) from "sticking". These include
but are not limited to Ad-aware's Ad-Watch, Spybot Tea Timer,
SpywareBlaster, SpySweeper, Spyware Doctor, CounterSpy, AVG Anti-Spyware,
Norton AntiVirus, McAfee VirusScan and/or Antispyware, NOD32, and Zone Alarm
(Free, Pro, & Security Suite).

Since you have a direct connection (through your router) to your ISP,
you should NOT be using the auto-detect setting. It can cause
timeouts. Disable WPAD (Web Proxy Auto-Discover) in Internet Explorer:
- Internet Options -> Connections -> LAN
- Disable 'Automatically detect settings'

Regarding WPAD, read:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/307502
http://www.vnunet.com/vnunet/news/2204911/microsoft-warns-vulnerability
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/advisory/945713.mspx
http://perimetergrid.com/wp/2008/01/11/wpad-internet-explorers-worst-...

I have had that option disabled for many years. I don't use web proxies
and don't remember ever having an ISP that hooked me up to one. I never
saw a need to enable this option (at home) but then I've never been on a
3rd tier provider/domain, either. There is no point to do the multitude
host searches trying to find a WPAD server when there isn't one. It can
cause a "gateway timeout" error in IE because it took too long to find a
WPAD server (that does not exist). The WPAD functionality is documented
in the IEAK (Internet Explorer Administration Kit).

In your case, it is likely that you installed some security or
protection software (anti-virus, anti-malware, anti-something) that is
enforcing the old settings. You try to change the settings but the
security software reverts back to the original settings.
