Desktop Shortcuts Fail, IE 7.0, Vista Business

I have a new PC with Visa Business and IE 7.0. I frequently drag URL's from
IE to the desktop. This capability was working but now when you drag the URL
to the desktop it creates an ICON but it does not contain the URL. When you
clisk on the icon the error message is "The target of this Internet Shortcut
is not valid. Go to the Internet Sortcut property sheet and make sure th
etarget is correct". I have found I can temporarily correct the problem by
deleting the profile and create a new one. It seems to occur over time for
other profiles on the same PC.

Hi,
Go to Control Panel> Default Programs> Set your default programs> Internet
Explorer> Set as default.

(I hope it's that easy)

Hi,
When you first create it, does the Internet Shortcut have a target? Could a
third-party program be causing this? What security programs have you
installed? Any other programs that would be interacting with IE?

I have two new Lenovo Laptops. The problem has occured on both. The problem
has occurred with and without Mcafee 8.5 Enterprise edition. The only other
software installed in Windows Defender and Office 2007. The problem seems to
happen almost immediately after logging in. I am wondering if it has
something to do with the sidebar. I have disabled the sidebar on both
laptops and have not had a recurrence. When the Sidebasr was installed I was
only using the calendar and clock provide by MS.

Thanks for your continuing interest!

Hi,
Did Ronnie Vernon's suggestion in the
microsoft.public.windows.vista.administration_accounts_passwords
newsgroup help?

Ronnie's suggestion is
"I think this behavior is associated with the protected mode in IE7.
Instead of dragging the URL to the desktop, right click in the web page and
select Create Shortcut from the context menu."

I will try that. I need to right click more. I was unaware you could create
a shortcut from there.

Thanks for your help. I will turn on the Side Bar and see how things go
from here.

I believe I have figured out the cause of the problem which sounds like a bug
with IE 7.0 and Vista Business. I haved aways changed the enviromental
varible for each profile from %USERPROFILE%\AppData\Local\Temp to c:\temp.
Yeah, it is my way of remembering to clean up all of the files that windows
and other application leaves behind. Well it suddenly dawned on me that
changing the path to c:\temp seems to cause the problem.
