I'm not sure what it is actually called, but it's the little icon on the
bottom right-hand part of the screen next to the clock. It's the one with
the two computers, and a globe if you're connected.

I have no idea what happened, but it's just gone.

This makes connecting to the internet a bit of a hassle.

Can anyone help me out?

Windows version?
How do you connect?
Well, normally the net connects automatically, but that little icon shows if
it's connected. If it doesn't connect right, I can manually connect by right
clicking and going to connect to a network, or choose network and sharing
center, but right now I have to open network connections, click "connect to"
to connect, or go to Network and sharing center.

But the main issue is knowing for sure if I'm connected or not without
looking all over.

I connect with wireless high-speed or LAN. My Windows version is Vista.

And to the other person who replied:

I know the net works. It's when it's not working that's the pain.

And i did not find any settings

Right click a blank spot on the Taskbar and choose Properties.
Click Norification Area.
Click Network so the box is checked.

The presence of absence of the icon is irrelevant to your
connectivity. There is no hassle to actually CONNECT to the Internet
whether you see the icon or not. The tires on your car still work
although you cannot see them when riding inside to drive the car.

Go into the Network applet in Control Panel and look at the properties
for your LAN or dial-up connection (you didn't mention WHAT type of
connection you have). One of the properties that you can configure is
if a tray icon is displayed when connected.
