I can't seem to change this setting. Even with "manage add-ons" nothing
changes as the option is grayed out. I keep getting a warning sign when I
open IE saying "add-on has been disabled but is needed for IE 7 updates"
EVERY time. Isn't there some option to enable add-ons without having this
annoying pop-up??? Please help.

Hi,
1. Right-click the IE icon on the Start Menu, choose Properties. Go to the
Shortcut tab. In the Target field, if "-extoff" is at the end of the path to
iexplore.exe, edit it out leaving "C:\Program Files\Internet
Explorer\iexplore.exe" (leave the quotes.)

2. Internet Options> Advanced> Browsing> check "Enable third-party browser
extensions."

Hope this helps,
Don

You may have a horked (dirty; bad; flawed) install of IE7. I suggest that
you...

1. Uninstall IE7 (which automatically returns you to IE6) per
http://www.ie-vista.com/kbase2.html

2a. Uninstall all toolbars and third-party Windows Themes (including Window
Blinds).

2b. Disable all Norton Add-ons, if applicable.

3. Reinstall IE7 exactly per
http://www.ie-vista.com/known_issues.html#pre-install, and using
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/downloads/default.mspx as the installation
source, not Automatic/Windows Update.

4. IMMEDIATELY go to http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com and install any
critical updates offered. If a "Root Certificates" update is listed in the
Optional category, you might install it, too, to take full advantage of
IE7's additional security.

We don't know what "the same problem" is. The information in this article:

"How to ask a question"

will help you create a question that is more likely to provide the
information you are seeking.

XP SP2 Fresh Installation. The problem seems to have begun after I "reset"
under the Advanced tab in Control Panels/Internet Options when trying to be
sure I had put back all of the security settings to their original position
after allowing the installation of some Active X program during setup of IE.
(I can't say this is exactly when the problem started, because I was also
using Firefox at the time.)
Now, when I go in under Control Panels / Internet Options to Manage Add-ons,
they all come up "Enabled," even though the browser says they're disabled.
Similarly under the Advanced tab, even though I've restarted after clicking
"Restore Advanced Settings" with "Enable third-party extensions" checked, the
browser continues to come up with the extensions disabled.
I realize that MS Office is highly integrated, but it is sure tempting to
think I could just uninstall and reinstall IE7 to clean this mess up. Is
there some simple fix like that? Thanks for any suggestions.

Thank you for your prompt (immediate!) reply.

In the brief interim since posting I tried re-starting IE for a third time
after re-doing the settings under the Advanced tab in Control Panels again,
and this time it did respond to them. Why it did not after the first
complete re-start is beyond me, but anyway, now it is running with the
extensions. I thank you for your time and attention.
